PMP’s Story
Why I Do This
Pimp My Playset , in all reality, started out as a passing teenage hobby. I have always loved hands on artistic pursuits since I was a child. I started drawing and colouring when I was a very young, progressed into music, drafting and design later on.
The name is a play on the 90’s MTV Pimp My Ride show. They would take a student with a car that was in sad shape, and “pimp” it out/ fix it up in a custom way tailored to the students’ personality. I just don’t have any cool rappers to host me yet. Any takers ?LOL
I was a teen studying music at the time, and between gigs and bands, I had to create, at least in part, with a different medium to sort of recharge and relax. I was attending a public showing of general art during the Canadian National Exhibition, and found inspiration. I found that about an hour at day’s end was fun and actually helped me sleep sounder. After a while, and a bunch of custom figures made, I brought them to a collector’s show and sold about $800 worth at about $30 to $40 a piece. I eventually got known as the guy who made this stuff and started to write articles in collectors magazines. Not bad for an eighteen year old. ( Article below).
Now I’ve always loved figuring out how things worked. I used to take apart my electronics and motorized stuff, seeing how it worked. Then putting them back together, in working order. In high school I studied subjects where I got to see how things worked and get my hands dirty. It started with bicycles , then auto mechanics, drafting , art class of course, since I had drawn since I was about . . .now that I think of it, as a toddler, then right into drawing as I grew. Now honestly, I stink at drawing now. I just started to try and doodle again.
Fast forward a bunch of years, and a few life changing events, slight P.T.S.D. has fired up this hobby . This is a big part of what I do to relax and calm the storm that is my mind. I want to share what I know and use art for therapy. They say art has no purpose, I disagree. This is one of the best purposes there is, therapy. I have a number of years of rapid prototyping, trade show booth, mold making, product development, carpentry, circuit bending, painting, faux finishing, automotive tinkering and just art making and design in general. I have folded in up-cycling, and use recycled processes and elements in most of my work, to make this venture a feasible carbon footprint reducing business lifestyle.
Art for therapy !
So many causes need attention in the world, I have chosen three for personal reasons. I have aligned myself with the following charities;
The Heart and Stroke Foundation of Canada, The Hospital for Sick Children, Toronto, and The Terry Fox Foundation of Canada. Charity projects will definitely be widely promoted! TBA!
